FAQ

Do I need to download the tool, or can I run it online?

If you are a researcher, you can create an account on the website. If you are a simple user, you need to install the IoT Lab app on your smartphone (Android or iOS) to participate to the different research projects. The IoT Lab app is available on Google Play and Apple Store.

Can I run the tool on a phone or tablet?

Yes, on both.

Do I have to pay for using the tool?

It is totally free.

Can I make any changes to the tool for my specific needs?

If you want to improve the tool, propose your change through the following form: Contact us

Can I have the tool in my native language?

The mobile application is currently available in English and French. We are hoping to add more languages in the future. The website is in English only.

What kinds of data are collected on the smartphones?

The different types of sensors available on a smartphone are the GPS sensor, the accelerometer, the gyroscope, the magnetometer and the light sensor. The GPS sensor retrieves the current position or localisation of the smartphone on the Earth based on the information provided by the navigation satellites; basically, the data used for the geolocalisation is expressed in latitude and longitude. The accelerometer measures the acceleration force that is applied to the smartphone on the three physical axes (X, Y and Z). This includes the force of gravity and the unit is of course m/s². The data provided by the accelerometer is used to detect the motion of the smartphone, for example when the smartphone is shaked. The data measured by the gyroscope is the rate of rotation of the smartphone around each physical axis; the unit is rad/s. The data given by the gyroscope permits to determine the rotation of the smartphone. The magnetometer measures the ambient magnetic field for all physical axes. The unit is the uT and the values are used to make a compass with the smartphone. The ambient light level, also called the illumination, is measured by the light sensor and the unit is the lux, abridged lx. This is useful to set the screen brightness for instance.

How to delete my profile on the IoT Lab online platform?

You can delete your profile saved into the IoT Lab database from the IoT Lab mobile application. The process is easy: on the mobile application, click on the information button on the right top corner of the screen. Then, scroll until the end of the page and finally, click on the "Delete account" button; a confirmation from your side is of course requested. To create a new account, you should restart the mobile application.

How to see the experiments which I am taking part?

On the IoT Lab mobile application, click on the "Research" tab, then click on the button named "My participations". So, only the experiments where you have subscribed are appearing.

How to see the sensors data which I am currently sharing?

You can see the current status of sharing of each sensor on your smartphone. To do this, click on the icon representing a toothed wheel. Then the list of the different available sensors of your smartphone is displayed: you can now set which of your sensors are shared or not with the IoT Lab online platform.
